Real crime is often stranger than fiction…
Richard’s battle against cyber criminals on the ‘dark web’
RANSOMWARE NEGOTIATION, MURDER, BURGLARIES, ARMED ROBBERIES, DRUG-DEALING AND LIFESAVING BRAIN SURGERY
A gripping tale of resilience, following a police officer’s journey through adversity, from life-threatening injuries to personal triumph. An astonishing account of negotiations with cyber gangs who threaten our major companies.
A captivating memoir of a Lancashire lad who wanted to be a cop. From the streets of Manchester to the shores of Portsmouth, this is a journey of courage that explores the complexities of human experiences.
The author’s vivid storytelling brings to life what it was like as a child and young man, ‘Up North’, surrounded by bad influences. These issues meant that he almost didn’t make the grade!
This book shows how he travelled, chasing the ‘American dream’, and found himself at the sharp end of inner-city police work in the 1990s.
Richard describes the thrill of the chase, quiet moments of reflection and how the police also dealt with humorous incidents. At six feet and six inches tall, his helmet was bound to dislodge the odd pub sign. How could his early morning ‘drugs bust’ target the wrong address, with an elderly couple tucked up in bed? Who set off a firework under the chair of a dozing WPC? And who made off with all the Jaffa Cakes?
Richard is becoming well known for negotiating with cyber criminals on the dark web, trying to protect companies from data loss and ransom demands. While in the force, he was a specialist in the role and continues to the present day with his own private business.
Richard’s compelling story has an underlying theme of battling against adversity. While on duty, he suffered a massive brain haemorrhage. His life was in serious danger, but the skills of a top surgeon meant that Richard was soon on the road to recovery.
From the thrill of the chase to quiet moments of reflection. From fighting armed and dangerous criminals to preventing a suicide. From investigating spooky screams in the sea mist to negotiating with cyber gangs on the dark web. Everything pales into insignificance with Richard’s life-threatening brain haemorrhage. A true story of resilience, battling against incredible odds. A poignant and honest portrayal of a life well-lived.
The pensioner said that he and his wife had gone to the hotel to resolve some differences in their marriage. They had only recently become man and wife, but things weren’t working out.
‘Yep, I killed my wife,’ he told me. ‘I used a draught excluder.’
A draught excluder? I wondered what he was on about. It transpired that he had brought this heavy draught excluder from the bottom of a door at their home address. It was like a heavy sack; an unusual murder weapon, to say the least. There was an element of premeditation in my mind. A most peculiar case.
CID officers weren’t happy. I obtained a signed confession, so they had nothing to investigate!
There was still another intriguing detail to emerge from the case. In court, it was revealed that the pensioner had become involved in a row with his new wife over the cooking of scrambled eggs.
He said that his previous ex-wife had made a better job of scrambling the eggs, leading to an almighty argument…and a tragic death.
